Off to Agra

My company arranged for my driver to take me to Agra to visit Taj Mahal. My friend offered to go with me, so it was a lot of fun!
Her aunt lives in a small palace near Agra (yeah, seriously) so in this sea of people and cars and choas, there is this gate you drive through into this beautiful little piece of solitude and beauty. We had a nice lunch there and then off to Taj.
We hadn't thought about it being a long weekend, so I was shocked when again, I'm the only white there! I figured only western tourists would go, but nope...lots of Indians. It was fun.
The Taj Mahal, despite how we were taught in America, is not a palace but a crypt built for one woman by her husband. The love story around it is kind of sweet and worth reading about. Basically, they were a love match in a time where that was not common. Upon her death the husband was so distraught that he had the Taj Mahal built over the course of 20+ years by 22,000 workers. Upon completion, their hands were cut off so the beauty of the Taj could never be replicated. Later in life, his son had him imprisoned while he assumed the crown. He requested if he were to be imprisoned that they put him in Lal Quila (Red Fort) so that he could spend his remaining days looking upon the Taj Mahal and his wife. Seriously, how sweet is that.
Anyway, the Taj is amazingly beautiful and so large you must actually be there to appreciate it.
Enjoy the photos!
