Lava River Cave - what an experience

the map and history of the lave cave

Adrian and I had decided even before I went on my trip, that we would check out the Lava River Cave in Coconino National Forest. So when we left Grand Canyon, we set our directions here. We weren't qiute sure were it was located, and ended up driving up to the Snow Bowl. That place was closed, so Adrian made a call to get directions. Turned out we had drove a bit too far, but there were no signs that said Lava River Cave anywhere. Anyway; we drove back and found our exit, and drove on messy dirtroads for what seem to like an a small eternity. That really was a road for 4wheelers and not for ordinary compact cars... damn. After driving for a while we saw a sign that said Lava River Cave, so we knew at least we were on the right way. A few more miles on this dirt road in the woods, and we found what we were looking for. YAY...

It was no one there, and the silence in the woods was awesome.

this is the entrance to the cave
After parking the car, we walked towards the cave, and on distance it looked just like a pile of rocks in the middle on nowhere... but as we got closer we could see the plaque with a map over the cave and some directions. Oh, and we saw the entrance.. wow, it looked like no one could come in there at all, but in and down we went. Turned our small Target flashlights on, and embarked into the darkness of the cave. And man, was it dark down there... and rocky too. Especially the descent, but it was fun.

Adrian led the way down, but as it turned darker and we lost the little daylight we had in the beginning, I took the lead. Think my dear Adrian freaked out a little bit... ;o)

So on we went.. or stumbled is the more appropriate word, 'cause it wasn't easy walking thru the cave. And at some point the roof caved in so we almost had to crawl.

looks kinda narrow, doesn't it?

There's a place little over middle that the trail splits, if you're ever there, stay to the left. We tried the right one first, but that trail was caved in so much, we couldn't come thru and we had to turn back and take to the left. For some reason we believed there was an exit in the other end, so imagine our surprise when we found that there were no exit and we had to stumble our way back... HAHAHA

Oh well, we headed back to were we came from and this time we met some others in there. First a couple and closer to the entrance/exit a couple of ladies. No bats though.. could have been fun to see them too and since it's so darn dark in there, they are known to hang out there so to speak.

We came back to our starting point and started climbing back up into the sunshine. First I bumped my head, then Adrian did. Think his bump was a bit harder then mine though...

But the whole experience was awesome and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes something different. :o)
