Martin and Marney - Partners in Crime
October 1, 1993
For now, this is first the entry of this blog dedicated to my favorite canines. Hopefully, I can find more photos, but for now I'll introduce Martin and Marney. Marney was my sister's dog that she got shortly after picking Martin up at animal shelter in Florida. Martin is a 15+ year old Black Lab mix. Veterinarians and many other people have guessed what he's mixed with, but no one knows for sure and I'm fine with that because whatever the mix is, he's the best dog ever. :) My guesses are Dalmatian or Boxer. Some people think Rotweiler and are sometimes afraid of Martin, but they couldn't be more wrong. Marney was a pure-bred Sheltie and for several years was Martin partner-in-crime. My sister moved both of them from her cramped apartment in Florida back to my family's lakeside home just outside Fairmont, Minnesota. Seeing them realize they had some open space to run in endless circles and chase each other, squirrels, leaves and anything else that moved including the wind will probably be one of the funniest things I will ever see in my life. It still makes me smile to this day. :)
My sister eventually moved to Brussels, Belgium and while she probably wanted to take both with her, realistically she could only take one. Luckily for me, Martin drew the short straw and Marney got to experience life as a European canine for a few years. About six years ago, my sister moved back to Minnesota and Marney returned with her having seen more of the world than some people. Unfortunately, Marney passed away last year, but she too was a great dog and companion for everyone in our family. I need to check with my sister and see if she has any pictures of Marney and Martin as I don't have a lot since neither liked the noise pre-digital cameras made or the fact that your face would get covered by the camera. They would absolutely both go nuts are bark like crazy. It was quite funny, but you'd have to be careful as Martin would want to find out what was making noise inside the camera and make it stop. Similar to what he used to do with squeaky dog toys. Those would last about 15 minutes before he would have the toy "de-squeaked". Too bad, digital cameras weren't around sooner. I would have so many more fun photos and videos. Ever seen a dog chase a laser? I used to bring a laser out, so Martin could get some exercise, but I have to admit it was as much for that as it was for my entertainment. He loved it and of course would get a treat. He's getting old, but one day I'll have to try to get him to re-create this on video as I'd like to have a video of it for posterity. I'll add more photos from time to time as I find them. Thanks for listening to me babble on about my four-legged friends. :)
