A sweet layover in Houston - meeting sweet Lhea :)
December 30, 2008
Lhea contacted me some months ago, when I posted I'd have a layover in Houston. Unfortunately we weren't able to meet, but it didn't mean we didn't keep in touch. This time I was having 3 layovers in Houston, 2 of them would be short ones, but 1 would be a long one. So, it'd give me time to meet TB's, hehe. Well, as long as they live close to the airport...
After our surprising and amazing meeting at the carousel, plus the MUST hug, haha, I did the check in and was ready to leave the airport for a couple of hours with her. We left the airport around 2pm and had to be back before 5, mmm. That didn't leave us much time to go somewhere far away, but it wouldn't stop to spend sometime together, chilling out and chatting. I have been surrounded by guys the last days in New Orleans, so girl company was more than appreciated. :)
I haven't had lunch and was getting hungry, so Leah suggested to go to the "Cracker Barrel". This is an Old Country Store which not only is a store itself, but also has a restaurant and of course, their cuisine is Texas, haha. Awesome!!! In our way, I was telling Lhea about my experiences as TB, since she's just getting more into it. She hasn't been making any big travels recently because of her daughter who's still young to enjoy traveling and remembering places she visits. Lhea wants her to grow first and then travel with her. That would be so nice!!!
Peru has been always part of her dream destinations and I'd love to have her and her daughter in my country and show them around my hometown. You are more than welcome here, girls! And then she mentioned something that made me laugh. She didn't tell her friends about TB, haha. So, same as me TB is her secret identity, haha. Just in case we met somebody, we went to college together, haha. I haven't ever thought about that, mmm. Maybe I could use that story too, hehe.
We arrived to the Cracker Barrel. This place was so Texas, so country! I loved it!!! Good choice, Lhea! I had to get pictures of this place. Yeah! Finally I could take as many pics as I wanted without feeling embarrassed, haha. The waiter came and let us know they serve breakfast the whole day, so we could check the breakfast menu too, but we decided to go for the lunch one, hehe, although the breakfast one looked good too... I got a Chicken Tenderloin salad and Lhea Tenderloin Steak, as side she ordered besides mashed potatoes the breaded fried Okra. What's that?
When the waitress came, we asked her to take a pic, while I was looking so curious the okra, haha. First time I saw it. I tried it and loved it! In fact I almost ate all of it, hehe. Lhea and I have common friends in the Philippines and it felt so good being able to talk about all of them as we all were a big community, but hey! we are a big one, hehe.
After a tasty meal, we went to the store and just took a look around. The decoration was so nice, that I couldn't help taking many pics, hehe. OMG! I wished I'd have had more time in Houston... next time I had to plan a longer layover in Houston, at least 1 day. Lhea told me she'd love to have me around. I'd love to meet her daughter too. I told her I'd stay at a friend's in Austin, who is also a TB. She was amazed this TB network really works that well. I commented her Minh is Vietnamese and since I haven't ever tried Vietnamese food, she told me I should ask Minh to go to have some Pho, mmm. Ok, I'd do it ;) Lhea was a bit sad I couldn't stay longer, but we were talking about traveling together in the States, which would be awesome! I love this TB family!!!
So sorry, it was getting late and it was time to drive back to the airport... oh well, I'm sure we'd meet soon :)

Old fashion country cooking and nice country store - Cracker Barrel
I went to the Cracker Barrel while I was in Houston for a short visit, didn't have much time but didn't want fast food and burgers. We were in the mood for a great home-cooked meal. Cracker Barrel have plenty of seating, so you usually don't have to wait long to be seated, but if you have to wait, they have plenty of ways for you to pass the time.
As you walk in, there is a country store. We stopped there in our way out. They have some fun seasonal decor items as well as other collectible items, candles, and treats. We didn't shop, but we sat outside in the rocking chairs and relaxed.
I loved the atmosphere of the place, casual and country old-fashioned. They have a lovely fireplace and the smell of wood burning. So cozy!
They have old signs and memorabilia up on the walls.
The menu is diverse and has something for everyone. You can choose from "country favorites" such as chicken fried steak, pork chops, or sugar cured ham or from low carb options such as a grilled chicken salad, trout, or steak. With your meal, you get a choice of cornbread or biscuits and it's always hard to decide on one. Sometimes the servers will bring you a mixture of both! They serve them with butter, honey, and an assortment of jam/jelly. Most meals come with your choice of side items. They serve breakfast all day. Portion sizes definitely are big!
The service is quick and friendly. They keep your ice tea glass full, all the time!
Definitely it's an awesome country store where you can find things that will surly bring back the memories!
