Sushi, Desserts & lots of talking - always fun with Mal ;)
November 7, 2008
Well, I know this is not me at all, but I was feeling a bit down today... Mal decided not to leave it like that and we agreed to meet that day later and hang out. Mal has been in town for over a month but still didn't have Japanese food here. I told him not to worry about that. I love Japanese food too, but I haven't found THE place for Japanese yet. Mmm, what to do? Well, I'm internet addict, so I'd leave it to help me, haha. I have heard about a place in Miraflores. So I read about it and decided to go there. Next day we would have a party, so we both agreed to save our livers and not to drink that night. Therefore I was driving. I picked Malvin and we drove to the Sushi Bar. We almost missed it, but we found it, haha.
As I read, the place was small and charming. We arrived early, but by the time we left it was getting crowded. We got 2 types of makis and Malvin ordered green tea to drink with our food, perfect match. Mal was amazed about the fact I like the ginger so much, haha. According to my boss it's weird I like to eat "soap", haha. Then we had tuna sushi and a salad. Since the minute we checked the menu and saw the pic of that salad, we both knew what to order, haha. I was a bit afraid about how well/bad were my chops' skills. Fortunately they weren't too bad, haha. I'm writting a review about Edo Sushi Bar too. The food was delicious, very fresh and tasty.
We were full, but Mal told me he was in the mood for a dessert, haha. And I wouldn't say no to a sweet :P Where to go? I knew the perfect answer! Mal loves food, has heard about one of our most famous and best chefs and always wanted to try some of his food. This chef owns a very nice restaurant, but also a cafe. So, let's go to the cafe for our desserts. The place was packed, so we had to wait but not long and we used that time to take a look to the delicious desserts. OMG, it would be difficult to pick one...
Our table was ready. The waiter came with our coffee, Inca Kola and the display of desserts. OMG!!! All of them looked so tasty... Mal saw the "Tres Leches". He has been trying this one in different places in order to find the perfect one, so he ordered it. Let's see if Gaston's one (name of the chef) would be as good as expected. And the veredict... this "Tres Leches" is the winner! And what about I? Well, I had a hard time trying to decide for a dessert and at the end I got one called Pom. .. something. Ufff, I forgot the name - an excuse to go back for more, haha). It wasn't too sweet, delicious! We were enjoying our desserts as happy as children with new toys, haha. We were just chatting about the future and what will happen with our lives in the near future. Where in the world will we be in 1 year? What projects for our lives do we have? Well, not to go to far, where are we gonna be in 2 weeks? haha. Deep conversation, I know, ;)
There was still more to talk about, but we were already ready with our food and there were people waiting for tables, haha, so better order something else or move, mmm. Well, it was perfect I was driving, so we could go, get something to drink - we were thirsty, but not alcohol thirsty ;) - and have it in the car, while we kept on chatting and listen to some music. Ohhhh. at this point I realized I might not be meeting Mal when I come back from the States next Dec 1st... I'm gonna miss him so so so much... :(
well, but it's not time to be sad, we still have some more days in Lima and I'm more than sure, that will be meeting almost daily, haha

T'anta, simply delicious... :P
T'anta is owned by Gaston Acurio, one of the most famous and best chefs of Peru. He has a restaurant, which is very good and famous, but sometime ago he decided to open a cafe which is not as pricy as the restaurant, but serve high quality food too.
This chic café is comfortably stylish and there is bound to be something on the menu that will hit the spot. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner it is a slightly upscale version of a Peruvian café with a casual and modern atmosphere. It's perfect for quick, casual eats in the café or for takeout. They started with the location in Miraflores but right now there are 3, each of them very comfy and charming.
Regarding the food, they serve tasty salads, paninis, Peruvian sandwiches, homemade pastas and excellent desserts, which according to me are the highlight. They also serve tapas, blending the local and European flavours :P Tapas with a Peruvian twist. The one in charge of the desserts is Gaston's wife: Astrid and she does a terrific job! You may come just for a coffee or a cocktail, but I guarantee that you'll end up trying one of the desserts they offer. She uses the Peruvian ingredients for the traditional desserts and the result is just awesome! They don't take care only about the taste, but also about the presentation of every single dish.
One dessert that I found really great is the "tartita de maracuyá" (passion-fruit tart). Exceptional! Mal found here the best "Tres Leches" in the city. Doesn't matter which one you choose, all the desserts are so good... I feel like a child in a candy store, haha, well actually I'm one :P a big child, haha.
They also serve cocktails and happy hours in its location in Downtown.
The service is very good too. Although the place is always packed, the waiters have time to take good care of the customers. I asked about each dessert and the waiter was so patient and explained about everyone, haha. He also gave me some recommendations.
By the way, T'anta means Bread in Quechua - the Inca's language :)

Oish! - Edo Sushi Bar!
Japanese Cuisine is one of my favorites, but it's not so popular here. It's just getting popular. They are opening new sushi places and I decided to go with Mal to one I have never been before, but I have read very good reviews about it.
Edo Sushi Bar has been in the business for about 3 years now, when they started with a small place in San Borja. Now they have 3 and we went to the remodeled one in Miraflores, which has caramel colored chairs and reddish sushi bar, with all the fresh products on display. The windows have a cool bamboo design. They play good music too, making the atmosphere very nice.
Now, talk about the food. Edo offers amazing flavors, the freshest in seafood ingredients. They have made a name for themselves by being the ones with the largest selection of Sushi rolls and a very good quality – price ratio. This might be one of the "disadvantages" from Japanese food, that it can be expensive according to our standards, but not here where it is reasonably priced.
This time we tried first the makis and chose:
an Ura Maki, the "Kimono" (roll with tuna, shrimp tempura, Japanese Cucumber, involved with spinach) &
an Karami Maki, the "Rocoto Maki" (this was a fusion since it has the Japanese cucumber, shrimp, salmon but also a rocoto - Peruvian spicy red pepper - and cilantro dressing)
Both of them were really tasty!
We also tried the sushi, well good rice topped with fresh tuna was very good..
Finally we got one of the salads we saw at the menu. It was really fresh and so well presented. I loved the texture of it.
The food not only tastes very very good, but it's also so artistic presented... they take care of every single detail to make it really delightful.
Now, the staff. They are young and helpful. The itamaes can be young too, but have a lot of expertise and will surprise you with their creations. If you are alone, take a sit at the bar and let them do it!
Although this place is not old in business, they have already won over a devoted following crowd, and I'm one of them, hehe. I suggest you not only eat the rolls but try the other dishes they have carefully selected and you will be surprised.
