Having a tasty lunch with Tone & Christian :)
March 24, 2009
Yesterday, we were talking about trying the cebiche. Of course, if you are in Lima having fish and seafood is a MUST. Tone likes almost anything, just Christian is not a big fan of fish, but will see how to handle it... During the day I was thinking where to go, mmm. I usually go to the same places, since I know they are good. I remember I went to one located in other area of the city. It wasn't so easy to arrive, if you didn't know the place, but food was great. Furthermore a famous Peruvian chef and Anthony Bourdain from the Travel Chanel made great reviews about this place... so, we had a winner, hahaha. I'd be driving, so it wouldn't be hard reach this small local restaurant.
As we agreed I met the guys at 12:30pm. I usually complain about the taxis that stop in the middle of the street to pick up passengers, but I did the same today, hahaha. I told them we were going to another part of the city and that was the 1st time I was driving there, so maybe it'd take me long to find this place, hahaha. It didn't take me long at all. I just asked 1 man nearby and voila! We were there. It didn't look like a restaurant at all. A guy with a huge dog was at the entrance. We parked and went inside.
We arrived early. The place was empty, hahaha, but by the time we left it was getting crowded. The atmosphere here is great. It looked like a fish market, with nets hanging on the walls. Neither Tone or Christian knew what to order. No problem, Yadi to the rescue, hahaha. They decided to trust the local, hahaha. I ordered a cebiche and a jalea (fried fish and seafood) to share among the 3 of us. It was plenty of food.
The cebiche came first. It was really good and they liked the sweet potato! It was so nice, how they were doing what I did, hahaha. How I mixed the things, hahaha. Tone really liked it. Not so sure about Christian, but he tried it! We were aware, he didn't like fish and seafood very much, but he wanted to try the famous cebiche. That's the spirit!!!!
We haven't finished it yet, when the jalea came. It was a lot of food!!!! Tone was looking for the strangest pieces of seafood to try them, hahaha. While Christian was more cautious, but even though he tried almost everything, besides the squid. I have to be honest. I didn't have it either. We were just chatting and chilling out while we enjoyed our meal. The atmosphere was so laid back, no ceiling so you can feel the sun and breeze. Perfect day!
The guys wanted to do paragliding, so I called a friend who is an instructor and told me to give him a call in 1 hour. It wasn't windy enough. So, we had some time to kill and went to Barranco to walk around. Driving there was fun. I didn't know the streets very well, but was fun though and we were enjoying some cool music Christian introduced us too. Good job! They liked Barranco, but want to go back there to party, hahahaha.
Called back to Rafael, but no wind... what to do now? Christian was homeless. He did check out and was looking for another hostel. So Tone suggested him to check her hostel. We drove to Miraflores, picked his stuff and drove to Tone's hostel. Christian would stay there for the rest of the week. He'd meet another TB later. I had to go back to work, but would meet them later. Well, that's the plan so far... we'll see. Anyway, we had plans for wednesday already, yay!

Charming old style aka huarique - Cebicheria Sonia
First of all explaining what is a huarique, haha. We use this word to call the small and not so fancy places but with a charming atmosphere and most important: tasty food!!! This place is around 28 years old. It might not be easy to arrive there - unless you know how to do it - but it's totally worth.
Although it's not located in touristy area of Miraflores or near the business district, this place is well known. It has been visited by the most famous Peruvian chef and Anthony Bourdain from Travel Chanel. Both gave great reviews about it. So this spot became more popular.
Looking from outside you won't guess that house is a restaurant. It's located in Chorrillos, which is an area in front of the sea, but not a touristy one. The exterior looks not interesting, besides a boat in front of it. This place looks like an old style cebicheria, not fancy at all, but cozy. Like the colorful walls with nets hanging on them. On Sundays they have a show with singers. You will see Sonia and her husband cooking and talking to the customers. They tried to recreate a fish market, nice!
now, the food. They fix the typical fish & seafood dishes. Most of the new cebicherias, try to make innovations to the traditional dishes, but they want to keep it original and it works great. It's so fresh and tasty. Usually when you ask for seafood, you will get just octopus, calamari and something else, but here you will find everything, so good!!!
They like to keep things simple and it works great. Sodas in the glass bottles, no plastic bottles, no diet sodas, just the real stuff. Like this place and recommend to visit it when you are in Lima. Reaching it, it's a special trip, but worth :)
