We had no idea where to go or even where to look for a hostel in San Jose! We were lost when we hit the bus station, and luckily we ran into some guys who were headed to Tranquilo and said that we could follow them. We hooked up with the guys as they led us to Tranquilo Backpacker Paradisio. We crossed our fingers, hoping that there would be enough room for the three of us! There was!! Tranquilo is an artists dream. There is a different theme for each of the rooms, and it is not uncommon to find murals being painted on the walls. There is a great cafe as well as a fabulous hang out place inside and out. FREE INTERNET is a plus!
We discovered, as we stayed there, that there is a SUPERMAN line through the rainforests. Imagine being slung across the forest going 50-60 mph, hooked onto a large wire, watching the muddy river below wondering if there are piranas waiting for you to drop.. It sounded like the perfect adventure!
Staying at Tranquilo was an adventure in itself. We found some great restaurants within walking distance.. one of them was in an old Victorian house.. it had an ecclectic menu which was perfect for us. Walking around at night, we started noticing that Tranquilo might not be in the best neighborhood as we noticed that prostitutes lined the corner streets and men started to follow us. It would be wise to make some guy friends in CR.
