Day 5 Shanghai
June 15, 2004
In Huangpu district, there is this well known park called Yu Yuan, created by a Ming Dynasty officer for his parents. It has about 30 different pavillions and gardens for different functions, and it took me hours to finish all of them. At the entrance there is a rock signed by Chairman/General Secretary/President of PRC Jiang Zemin. Sometimes the pavillions are used for exhibitions, and the one I happened to ran into was an exhibitions of fans, and a couple galleries by local artists.
The gardens and rocks are absolutely beautiful and indescribable, but the streets outside the garden are full of overpriced tourist trap restaurants. We were hungry, so we bought the Nanxiang Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) there. It wasn't good, wasn't good at all. Few days afterwards we would visit the actual Nanxiang to savor the authentic Nanxiang Xiaolongbao. I wouldn't recommend people to buy at this place.

Eye for detail
I went to this garden on a rainy day but still quite enjoyed it. Just take your prettiest umbrella and stroll. It's not the best garden compared to the Suzhou Gardens, but probably the best (or only one?) you can find in Shanghai City. A nice place to hang out if you got tired of the city crowds and traffic.
You might find the area outside the garden crowded, but inside the garden people are nicely spaced out, even though there are a lot of visitors (possibly because there are many hidden passage ways in the garden to hide them all?) If you have an eye for detail, you will enjoy the garden even more.
