Now we head for Oakridge, Oregon where we will be spending the night. It isn’t really down out of the mountains but is a small logging community of about 3,000 people and it has a Best Western Motel. This isn’t the newest place we’ve been in but it has been well maintained and is clean and attractive. Somebody has done a nice job of putting pretty hanging baskets of flowers out around the front and the flower beds are pretty and clean. Our room is just around behind the office and offers nice amenities including a handicapped restroom. We asked the front desk clerk about good places to eat and she mentions two. One is at the east end of town, about a mile from the hotel and the other is a block away just about opposite the motel.
She says both are good. We drove to the east end of town and looked at that one, but there were no cars outside so we decided against it. We got some gas for the car and came back to the other one, Manning’s Café.
This is a very small local café probably seating no more than 20. And when we walked in there were 18 already eating. But one elderly couple at a table for four offered the two empty chairs to us. Turns out this local couple had lived there for 59 years and he had logged the area most of those years. We chatted about the wonderful waterfalls and he said he knew of several more being a hunter and fisherman and very familiar with the logging roads and Forest Service Roads, but didn’t want us to get lost back in the woods so he just talked about them. We had a very nice meal with them and enjoyed ourselves.
