driving to the ferry
So after I wrote that last thing I went and had a boring time in Adelaide. I went to the Central Markets but all that was there was food. I only spent about 10 minutes walking around and then found a little cafe thing and had a raspberry smoothie and fruit salad with yogurt. How healthy of me. After the market I headed down the street to Rundell Mall or something like that and went shopping. I bought a hoody. Yes it will be summer soon but I have a problem with buying hoodies. AND it was on sale. I also bought a wallet and ugly sunglasses. They were only $7. I don't know if I wrote that my other sunnies broke during the Great Ocean Road trip. Well I fell over and landed on my purse and the next morning when it was really sunny I went to get my sunglasses and 1 arm had broken off and the 1 lens thing had broken in half!! oops.
Anyways I walked along the street going into stores and not buying things because I need to get used to aussie fashion. I will get used to it eventually but I just don't understand how girls where some of the things they do! So by this time it was only about 12. Oh man I had no idea what to do so I ate some Mcdonalds. How unhealthy of my. I also have a problem... I have found a new liking for coke. I never really drank pop much but now I always drink coke! so bad. Sometimes it is coke zero though.. like now!! okay anyways I did nothing else until my bus left at 3:45. I sat outside the bus station for a while and read a book that I bought at the airport. Yes a book. And then it got really hot so I went and sat inside the bus station and met a lady from Malaysia that I was going on the same tour as.
So finally it waws 3:45 and time to get on the bus to take us to Cape Jervis
and the ferry. That was about a 2 hour bus ride through not much other then farms with lots of sheep and tiny little towns. We got on the 6 oclock ferry over to Penneshaw
. The ferries are pretty funny because the cars can't drive though them.. the ferries have to turn around at either side. So we got to Penneshaw and had a 2 minute walk up to our hostel. Me and Cheng (from Malaysia) and another gild Linda from Germany were all in a hostel room together. The hostel was so little and cute and the couple that ran it were so nice.
The man that checked us in called us by name every time he saw us. I guess it wouldn't be hard to remember everyone though because there weren't many people staying there. Me and Linda went to get some pizza for dinner and then we all headed down to the Penneshaw Penguin Centre to do a penguin tour!!!!!
It was SO cool! we learned a little bit about the penguins first and then went and walked down to the the beach. Well actually it wasnt a beach it was all rocky. They have an area all fenced off so the penguins dont get up on to the road and everywhere... even though they still do they try and minimize the amount. So we walked down these steps and there were baby penuins everywhere waiting for their parents to get home and feed them. It was dark out and we weren't allowed to use flashes on our cameras so my pictures didnt really turn out.
We had some flash lights (or torches as they are called here) but they had a pink light that didnt bug the birds. Oh well it was an awesome to see them. Right near the end our guide lady looked down the rocks near where the penguins come in from the ocean and there were probably about 20 of them waiting to come up. Then they all started jumping off the rocks and walking up towards us so we had to go because they use the stairs we were on to get up to their houses. SO COOL!! After that I went to bed because I was sooo tired from not sleeping much the night before on the bus.
Friday morning the bus picked us up and then picked up a bunch of people from the ferry and we were on our way! We drove for a while and then turned on to a dirt road!! lots of roads on KI are dirt.
so funny. We drove past a eucalyptus oil distillery and I took a picture out of the bus window. They do everything the same way they did 100 years ago when they first started making the oil.. pretty neat. We kept driving for a while and then our first stop was Seal Bay. We got a guide and she took us down to the beach where there were SO many sealions. Most of them were just being lazy on the beach but some of the younger ones were walking around and doing things. I took so many pictures and a couple videos as well that I will put up when I get back to Melbourne
where I don't have to pay for internet. We were down on the beach for probably half an hour and then we had to get back on the bus and go to lunch.
We had a bbq lunch at Vivonne Bay and then had about a 2 minute walk to a bird show. This place rescues birds and puts most of them back into the wild but not all. We got the chance to put a glove on and have the birds sit on our arm for a picture. I did that for the kookaburras! There were 2 of them but only 1 came on my arm. The other one flew away... well not away just into a tree. After the bird show we went to Flinders Chase National Park and our first stop was the Remarkable Rocks. They were pretty remarkable. I will write what my little paper says : Remarkable Rocks are a cluster of granite boulders, sculpted by the weather and perched on a granite dome rising steeply from the ocean. You can take a walk around these huge rocks that have been carved into many different weird and wonderful shapes by the wind and the ocan spray over many centuries.
Yep sounds pretty cool huh? They were HUGE and just kinda chilling there on top of an even bigger rock! They were all different shapes and some had holes through them and ya they were just really cool. So then we drove thought the park some more and saw the Cape du Couedic Lighthouse (lots of things have french names on the island because a french explorer was the first so circumnavigate the island and he named lots of things) The lighthouse was built in 1906. Then from there we walked down a boardwalk to see New Zealand fur seals!!! There were some beautiful views there. There were a bunch of steps that went down to Admirals Arch which is a "natural arch formed by pounding seas". There were so many seals... and they were so cute! I took a video and there are seals jumping in it! They were way better then the sealions because they actually did things.
We were there for a while and I took soooo many pictures again. Our tour guide said that this place used to be a really popular surfing spot until a guy from Kingscote (one of the towns on KI) got taken by a great white shark!! good thing I didn't fall in the water. Well no one surfs there anymore. Then we went to the visitors center where we saw a kangaroo! yay 1 kangaroo while on Kangaroo Island. We saw lots of dead ones on the side of the road but only 1 live one. Well then we drove for another 2 hours back to Penneshaw and got back to the hostel at about 6:30. When we got back another girl had come and was staying in our room. She was american and I could tell by the second word she said because it was yall! haha. So then I made a cup of noodles for dinner and also ate some bbq shapes.
.. they are bbq flavour crackers in different shapes.. thats why they are called shapes! and had a bottle of coke. I am SO healthy it's unbelievable! I went to bed early again because there is nothing to do there at night. Everything is closed by 8:30!
This morning I had to get up early to get the 8:30 ferry. Me and the american girl went together and met some old american people on the ferry. Me and the old american guy were in line for coffee and both got it for free! woohooo. So it was a boring little ferry ride until there were dolphins!!! there were at least 3 of them and we saw them twice! they were swimming infront of the ferry! I love dolphins! Then another 2 hour bus ride back to boring Adelaide. I got to the hostel an hour before I was allowed to check in so I came on the internet for a while.
Then at 1 I checked in and went and fell asleep for a couple hours. I woke up at 4:30 and had a shower and then was hungry so I went to the supermarket to buy some noodles. Well it was closed. Apparently at 5:30 on a saturday you aren't allowed to buy food in Adelaide. I even went and found another store that was also closed! SO annoying. So I went to subway and got a sub and a bottle of coke. Then I went to some 24 hour convenience store and bought some fruit salad in a can. :) Now I am bored again so I wrote all of this. There is no one else in my room yet so it is kind of lonely in there. It is games night in the hostel tonight so I will probably go up there and see how it is. Tomorrow I have NO idea what I am going to do. I think I will walk around the city quickly and take pictures of all the old buildings and then go to the beach if it is nice again. It was over 30 degrees today! :)
I will update next after my Borossa Valley tour!
