Fortaleza is commonly known as the capital of forró, a folkloric rhythm that was created by local fishermen. In such melody, the accordion plays an essential part.
This city was born during the war between Dutch and Portuguese people, for the conquer of the territory of Ceara, in the middles of The XVII Century.
This city is situated under the Equatorial Line, being the farthest tourist city in the north west region of Brazil.
Fortaleza is an important tourist point. Half a million tourists visit it every year. These people are particularly attracted to the wonderful 25 kilometre littoral, that contains 25 beaches covered by dunes.
The metropolitan zone of Fortaleza has a modern architecture and an excellent tourist infrastructure.
Because of its position in The Equator, the weather is tropical, with temperatures between 25 and 28° C. In this region, the rain is not continue.

The city has a hot climate and affords a warm reception to visitors, attracted mainly by the beauty of its beaches. Beach Park at Ponta das Dunas is the largest water park in Brazil, offering also one of the best hotel resorts in Brazil.
Fortaleza is celebrated in verse and prose as the "blonde bride of the sun". The sea shore, running the length of the city, has a variety of attractions. Iracema beach is a bohemian enclave, with dozens of all-night bars (Pirata being the largest one) situated in buildings which still retain the architectural features of the turn of the century. Its biggest attractions are the Estoril, which houses restaurants and an exhibition gallery, the Ponte dos Ingleses - Bridge of the Englishmen, from which beautiful sunsets can be observed, and the Cultural Center Dragão do Mar, one of the most modern and complete cultural centers in Brazil.
