Mount Rushmore

Hill City Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

Ever thought about taking a month off, and driving coast to coast? In the summer of 2006 we got to do just that! We traveled from Connecticut to the Pacific and back, visiting as many National Parks and Attractions as we could, tent camping along the way. Here is our story!

Mount Rushmore

"The Fifth Head"
We headed on down the highway the Hill City KOA, just 5 miles from Mount Rushmore National Monument.  I stayed at this camp eight years ago, they've built a new store and office since then. They also have riding stables. We set up our camp, then went to check out the monument. The campground offers a shuttle bus to see the lighting ceremony, but we just took the truck...they have a large parking area outside the monument. We walked the trail around it, trying to get some close up views of the faces on the mountain.  Tyler and I took some pictures of each other, inserting each others heads in line with the mountain profiles, to try to get some funny shots.  By then the sun was going down, so we grabbed some seats in the large ampitheater they have, to watch the nighttime lighting ceremony, and a movie about the history of the monument and its creator, Gutzon Borghlum.  A ranger also gave us a talk about the mountain and the history of the area. There was a LONG line at the concession area, for ice cream and sodas before the movie!  Headed back to camp after that, we have a long day planned for tomorrow!
