Ever thought about taking a month off, and driving coast to coast? In the summer of 2006 we got to do just that! We traveled from Connecticut to the Pacific and back, visiting as many National Parks and Attractions as we could, tent camping along the way. Here is our story!

Wall Drug

The Famous Wall Drug Store

If you have ever driven across South Dakota, you know you cannot miss the multitude of signs advertising Wall Drug.  They started by advertising free ice water for travelers, and built it up from there.  It has grown into it's own phenomena,  a cheesy tourist trap for sure, but well worth a visit if you are in the area!   Plenty of activities for kids of all ages, a giant mechanical T Rex,  statues of rabbits, buffalo and "jackalopes", all kinds of gifts, souvenirs, fossils, etc. as well as restaurants and shops galore.  Hard to describe, next to impossible to NOT stop there after passing 500 or so road signs promoting it's every feature!  We had lunch there, the open faced roast beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy are EXCELLENT! Cold soda and ice cream was also welcome after the opressive heat of the Badlands.

Wall Drug

We filled up our water bottles at the free "well" in the courtyard.. but it was a little warm, and tasted kinda funny... we wound up dumping it out later!   Had kind of a tinny taste to it.  Funny, that the thing that was the original "draw" to this place, was the only thing we didn't like there! We did get several mementos there, such as a magnet, shot glass, and a coffee mug for Dawn, as well as free bumper stickers and a road sign you could take home, with a place to write down how many miles to Wall Drug!  A very clever business idea that has grown over the years.  Worth a look if passing through!

Yes, it is a cheesy tourist trap, but the kids will love it! Much bigger than it seems from outside, something for everyone. ENORMOUS gift shop, all the typical touristy stuff, plus dinosaur fossils, even a giant mechanical T-Rex that comes to life every 15 minutes or so! Plus, the food is terrific..we loved the open faced roast beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy! Definitely plan on spending an hour or two...don't worry about finding it, there are about 500 roadside signs to tell you where to go!

I LLLLOOOVVVEEE cheesy tourist traps on road trips! People watching is usually a premium at these places. I'll have to be sure to drive by this one!
