Redwoods National Park

Ever thought about taking a month off, and driving coast to coast? In the summer of 2006 we got to do just that! We traveled from Connecticut to the Pacific and back, visiting as many National Parks and Attractions as we could, tent camping along the way. Here is our story!

Redwoods National Park

Tyler climbs a Redwood

Tyler picked a bunch of blackberries for breakfast, they were growing wild behind our campsite.  We headed on down into California, and not to far past the state sign we saw our first Redwood Grove.  We walked the tall tree trail, and Tyler was happy to find more bananna slugs.  We were all very impressed with the size of the trees!  After that, we stopped at the visitors center in Crescent City, then drove along the coast.  We stopped to take the trail to "The Big Tree",  which I guess is the biggest redwood around.  Around the turn of the century, someone wanted to cut it down, and make a dance floor out of the stump!  Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed, and they saved the tree.

We saw some elk in a field, then took a long, winding dirt road  down to the beach.

Long dirt road down to the beach
We actually had to drive through some shallow creeks to get there.  It was a long, bumpy road to get there, but because of that, it wasn't too crowded when we got to the beach.  The waves were really huge, we all waded into the water, but only Tyler went swimming. (The air was warm, but the water was cold!)  Dawn met a strange couple that kept talking to her, even as she tried to walk away from them!  We collected some nice dried out driftwood for firewood.  We stayed there for a picnic lunch, and a Raven swooped down and stole Dawn's bag of Doritos right off the picnic table!  We chased him down as he tried to fly away, but it was too heavy, and he dropped it.  Dawn wouldn't eat the rescued Dorito's now that they had a "beak hole" in the bag, so I traded her for my chips!   We wound up giving the ravens a few pieces of bread instead, they were happy.   We went back and explored Redwood Park for awhile, and then it was time to head south again.
