Niagara Falls, on the Canadian Side
When our tour ended on the US side, we drove over the Peace Bridge into Canada. Tyler and I had our passports, Dawn had her birth certificate and drivers license. (As of Jan 1, 2007, you now need a passport to get into Canada). We parked near the "Old Scow", an old barge that has been stuck for years just above the Falls. This barge broke free many years ago with 3 men on it and almost went over. One of the men managed to swim to safety before going over, but the other 2 spent a harrowing night on the barge before being rescued. They had the sense to open the floodgates on the barge and sink it before it was swept over the Falls, and it remains there to this day! We then walked over to Horseshoe Falls, where several dozen people were gathered at the railing.
We had dinner outside at a nice restaurant facing the Falls, and even saw a rainbow in the mist. We were feeding french fries to a seagull there that only had one leg! It was getting late by then, so rather than continue our journey west, we decided to camp at the KOA campground on the Canadian side. It was only about a mile away from where we were, but it was dark by the time we got there.
(Side Note:We stayed at KOA camps a lot on this trip, because they are clean, have well stocked camp stores, pools, hot tubs, recreation areas, and free hot showers. It is a franchise, so you know what they are like everywhere, no surprises. I purchased a 10% off KOA discout card before the trip, knowing it would pay for itself many times over. They accomodate campers, RV's, and tenters like us)
All in all, we saw a lot today! The tour was both entertaining and informative, and allowed us to see a lot more than we could have on our own. Tomorrow will be a travel day, as our next destination will be Chicago!
