On our way to Lake Isabella
When we left Sequoia, our goal was to get as close as we could to our next days destination, Death Valley. We got as far as Lake Isabella. We found a KOA that was pretty much empty...in fact, the manager was a little surprised to see us pull in at night, loking for a campsite! Not that he didn't have customers, this campground was also the local bar! The camp office was right next to the bar, and the manager was also the bartender. Pool right in front of the bar, behind a chain link fence! No matter, we're just here to eat and sleep. Started a campfire in the fire ring, and grilled up some burgers while we set up. Very dark night, and the ground was very dry & dusty, but the campground was just fine for our needs. I'm betting it will be a lot dryer tomorrow!
We stayed at this KOA in Weldon, CA when we were traveling from Sequoia National Park to Death Valley, it is one of the only campgrounds in the area. It was interesting that the camp seems to be run as a side business of the local bar! The reception area is connected to the bar area, and the bartender came over to sign us up. He seemed a little surprised to see us, as it was after 10 pm and there were very few campers there, but they did have a few patrons in the bar. The sites were dry & dusty, but adequate, with fire rings and picnic tables. Showers and bathrooms were clean, and they had a small pool right up front, (which we never had time to use) We like KOA's because they have to maintain a certain standard, so no surprises. (well, except for the bar!)
