Chicago
Thursday, July 27- It took about 45 minutes to get to Chicago, but we crossed a time zone, so we actually arrived 15 minutes earlier than when we left! We parked in all-day parking at Navy Pier, and walked around checking out the shops and a stained glass exhibit they had. Dawn found and bought a Chicago Blackhawks sweatshirt at one of the sports shops there. Being a big hockey fan, she was disappointed to see that a lot of stores carried plenty of Bears(football) and Cubs(baseball) paraphernalia, but this was the ONLY store we found that had any hockey stuff! We stopped at a ring of statues just outside the entrance to the pier, Tyler wanted to stop here and duplicate some funny pictures I had taken here with my friend Lee, on our last visit here eight years ago.
From there we tried to walk to Sears Tower, but it was too far so we took a bus. It was cheaper and easier than taking the truck and having to find & pay for parking again. Dawn got over her fear of heights and actually liked it when we got to the top. They made us sit through an 8 minute video about the construction of the Tower before we could go up, I guess they do that to control the crowds up top. The room had full-pane windows all around, so you had an unobstructed view of the city in all directions. You could see both Wrigley Field (Cubs) and Soldier Field (Bears). For some reason there were several bugs on the outside windows. Pretty high up for a bug! Ironically, Lee happened to call me while we were at the top, we had just been talking about him.
After getting a few souvenirs, we headed back down and caught the bus back to Navy Pier.We had lunch in the Beer Garden, it was kind of pricey for just burgers and pizza. They had a live band playing there, a few people were even dancing. While we were eating, a sudden summer squall kicked up and it got really windy. It started blowing our food around, and actually knocked my beer over! :( We finished up our food quickly and headed back to the truck. It was pouring when we left the city, but it stopped shortly after. There was a rainbow and an interesting sunset after the storm. Now, we're just going to drive as far as we can tonight. On to Wisconsin!
