Stressed but well worth it!

The initial appetizer spread.

I always love the idea of entertaining and feeding my friends.  I guess it's just the asian in me to want to ensure all my friends are perfectly satiated.  But everytime I start planning a dinner party - I fluctuate between feeling very happy and very stressed.  I had originally planned this little feast after sybil returned from Spain because she was raving about a shrimp dish (gambas pil pil) that she had and I told her I would try to make it for her.  It was supposed to be maybe 4 - 6 people, but as time wore on, the guest list grew to about 15 people!   The menu included:

Cheese & Charcuterie Plate

Gambas Pil Pil

Spanish Tortilla

Blue Crab dip with veggies

Hummus

Octopus Salad

Flank Steak with corn salsa

Spaghetti with almond pesto

Tuscan pork loin

Green Salad

The day before the dinner, I took a 1/2 day off work just so I could go to several different stores and start prepping my place for the party.

My tub o' drinks.
I had already purchased the prosecco and other beverages a few weeks ago to space out my errands, but I still had to go to costco, whole foods, trader joes, the cheese shop, etc.  sigh.   I had hoped to accomplish all this before evening so I could squeeze in a workout (but unfortunately the prep work took forever).  So no workout (darn!).  :)  OK, I admit I was happy not to have to workout but I was very tired and stressed out since I was trying all sorts of new untested recipes.   I didn't want to disappoint my friends (or worse, accidentally poison them).

On the day of the party, I had the brilliant idea of jogging for 3 miles in the morning.  (Stupid, I know)  I spent the rest of the day limping around my house cooking.

Spanish tortilla. I think I still like Bar Pintxo's better .. must get the recipe...
Around 3 or 4 I was feeling pretty good about the whole thing.  Everything was going according to schedule.  Then out of the blue two of my friends arrived (2 hours early!) and asked if they could shower at my place and get ready for the party.  I was a little frazzled but it all worked out!  They cleaned up and we opened up a bottle of prosecco.  Then more people started arriving early.  (I do have very punctual friends after all - lol!).  Luckily I always plan for such contingencies so most of my appetizers were out already.

The rest of the night was filled with wonderful conversation and laughter.  I do love seeing my different groups of friends mix and having a good time.  But more importantly, I simply love my friends.

haha - i'm taking a break for a little while. i'm pooped! :) prosecco is pretty fab - cheaper than champagne and in many ways, easier to drink. :)
