The 90-minute Challenge

Frankfurt Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

Frankfurt was one of the cities where matches were played, so naturally I tried my best to be back there for a bit to have a look around and soak up some of the atmosphere. I also had a short, non-football-related day to relax and enjoy being there.

I had decided that during the match that was played in the stadium in Frankfurt I would be in town and do a video that would introduce Frankfurt as well as show the atmosphere during the match and that's the video you can see on here. Apologies about my introduction and ending, makes me cringe every time. But I hope it does give you an idea about the place and maybe it even shows that despite our reputation we Germans know how to party, have a good time, laugh, and simply enjoy life. ... As well as occasionally being efficient and good at organising things :P

During the time I was in Frankfurt it was still only the group stage but the atmosphere was already pretty good and people seemed to be partying and enjoying themselves. Germany had won their first two matches and fans started to get excited about the way the Nationalmannschaft was playing (but I have the feeling I chose the wrong time to be in Germany, because it was nothing compared with what was to come).
Introducing Frankfurt during the 2006 World Cup, all in 90 minutes.
It was interesting to just walk aroud in town and observe. It seemed incredibly full even in places that were nothing to do with the World Cup, so many people from all over the world with cameras and camcorders, flags and football colours. But in the city centre it was like another stadium had been built up right by the river, the "Fan Fest" was a huge success and on the bus ride from work back home my mum saw nothing but a sea of orange wigs, shirts and flags: the Dutch cheering for their team.

It's a nice city, and one of the things I really like about it is how old and new buildings merge in the city centre. Gives it a special kind of feel. If you can (some other time), try and be in Frankfurt for the river festival "Mainuferfest".
