For this trip i tried the wizzair flightcarrier because it has a lot of cheap flights to poland. I paid around 10 eur. for a fligt from dortmund to Krakow and i must say this is a very good value for money. Arriving in Poland it becomes clear that most of the communism is no longer visible. One disadvantage for WizzAir is dat they fly on Katowitch instead of Krakow but they do have a shuttle bus that takes you in 2 hours to Krakow center.

Getting around:
Krakow center is not too big. Everything can be reached by foot and the roads are very easy to read and to get you r way around. I had no trouble navigation. Though i did notice that the people tend to push you around all the time in queues and stuff but i guess this is a culture thing ;-) The roads in Krakow are in good shape because currently everything is beeing renovated.
center hall
There is road and building construction everywere.

The old historic center is very clean and organised i never saw to many churches packed in one town center. I especially liked to just walk around in the city there are several well managed walking routes though the cities ( maps are free at the ITMC ).

The town has a great central square were its always busy and stuff is happening. at my visit there was a podium music and dance in the center. The old town had a castle on the side which can be visited for free ( outside ) and seems to be a strange mixture of different buildings and architecture. For 2 SZ you can visit the cave underneath the castle were appearently the legend says a dragon onces stayed. This dragon is now a symbol for this city.

Auswitz:
From krakow there are several day trips.
Auswitz I
Auswitz is a 2 and half hour drive and most busses show a video with images and information about the history of these sites. I must say that this trip will usually take a hole day and is very professional probably the best quality guided tour i ever had! (I did the MCIT one). The guided tours are well spoken (I had an english guide) and give a very good impression of the horrors that happend here. The tour takes you from Auswitz I to Auswitz III / Birkenau and shows you the living conditions of both camps. The trip back to krakow center is a silent one .....

Saltmines:
One of the 7 wonders from Poland is located right in Krakow and is also an UNESCO site. The Saltmines are located 30 min drive from old center. The tour takes you 150m underground and shows you various sites with salt sculptures.
Auswitz III (Birkenau)
Its quite a long walk underground but worth it. Why those miners made the statues still wonders me. They even build a complete church underground. I must say that this tour seems a bit commercial and not really authentic but its worth the visit.

Pubs:
It seems that all the time i went in a pub the way to go is down. In Krakow they used old cellars to house the pubs. There are also several restaurants that are located in these old sellers. I noticed that Vodka is the local drink here in Poland ;-) They have some really good ones you have to try when you visit this country.

Bad:
Construction everywere, Poland is for sure growing economy wise and becoming a western europe country. This reflects in all the road and building construction. Most of the buildings esp. outside the center a poorly maintained and show the traces of the past communism. Italian restaurants everywhere, Why i don't know!

Good:
Very friendly people willing to help. A lot of public transport ( trams ), Cheap compaired to western europe. clean and organised (old center). City center is busy everyday and stuff seems always happening there. Very nice and organised walking routes from example jewish center and old center castle.
