Me in a Canoe in the backwaters...

everyone says you must do the backwaters in alleppey and they are right. after i left varkala i took about a 2 hour train ride to alleppey to experience whatever one raves about. i only had a day and half there, since my time in the south was quickly dwindling and my departure date was fast approaching. from the friends i made in varkala, i received a recommendation of a place to stay and some contacts to help me find a houseboat or someone to tkae me out in a canoe on the backwaters.

the lemon tree is where i stayed and puli and his friends were incredibly helpful and eager to show me around, i could not have had better tour guides. i ended up taking a six hour canoe trip on the backwaters since i was just one person. most people rent a houseboat for the night, but for me it didn't make sense.

Backwaters.....
and in all honesty i am so glad i didn't. the canoe ride was amazing, it was able to go places the houseboat didn't and it didn't have the nosy motor to deal with either. i even got to paddle around the last hour. the day was great, we stopped for lunch and coffee at little huts off the water...and actually saw the filming of a hindi movie.....which was pretty cool. the backwaters are breathtaking and lived up to whatever one says about them. after i got back to the lemon tree, i ended up headin to the beack for the night, to see where the locals hang out. it was crazy, there was probably about 200 people all on the beach playing frisbee, volley ball and just hanging out. my friend said this is where everyone comes to socialize, it was a real treat to be a part of that and feel like i got to expereince a bit of everyday life.

after that night, i had to face the sad truth that i was leaving india in a few days. a part of me was ready to ditch the rest of my trip and stay on....and if i didn't have a friend to meet in bejing, i would. a part of me is in mourning that i am leaving, but i will be back....i haven't said that yet about anyplace i've been to so far....or at least i don't think i have.....but India has touched me in a way no other place has and it will be a permanent part of me.
