Our trip begun when we landed in Aarhus Airport on the "nose" of Denmark (see map) and rented a car. Then we visited some friends and went to the beach and then crossed over to esbjerg on the west coast. The beach stretches far and wide and the wind was tearing away at the bunkers left from WWII and the many visitors... funny enough there were about 100 cars and 99 were German!

Next day we went to the oldest city in Denmark which is called Ribe, just 30 min south of Esbjerg. I had actually never been there before and it was really cool... amazingly old buildings (which some nearly looked like they were going to fall down) and horse carriages.... AND they were doing an excavation in the middle, you could stand on a platform to watch them uncover the skeletons, neat!

Following we went to Funen (or Fyn in Danish), the middle island, where we met up with some more friends to see the beautiful castle Egeskov and say hi to my porpoises and seals at my old work.

The Sea Stallion - copy of the largest viking ship
Then the true viking trip begun as we crossed over to Zealand (Sjælland) where most viking settlements were. Here we stopped at the settlement Trelleborg which is right outside Slagelse to see the viking houses and remains. Usually they would have all sorts of activities on but unfortunately most staff had gone home the day we were there because they got sick :( The viking ships in Roskilde are always great to see and a couple of days before we were there a true copy of one of the largest viking ships returned from a journey to Ireland and back (see the pic with the Sea Stallion = Havhingsten). After that we went briefly through Copenhagen and then over to the Island Bornholm where my brother got married.
