Hintersee

We were staying in the area for other reasons, but the Hintersee was one of the highlights of our trip.

It was an unexpected detour after we realized there was a lake not too far from the bed and breakfast we were staying at in Ramsau.  We only went to have a look around but ended up staying the entire afternoon.  That's why I always like to leave empty spots on our schedule when we go places.

The area was beautiful with mountains all around and the lake reflecting the trees and mountains.  I have never in my life been in such a lovely place.  It was like standing in the middle of one of those scenic paintings that you look at and feel completely at peace.

There were paddle boats and little tour boats out on the water so we went to see where to do that.  Because our travel buddies had a baby with them, we decided that the tour boat would be the way to go today.  We boarded the little boat and prepared for a relaxing ride... mostly for the kids to get a chance to get out on a boat for a bit.  The lady even let the older kids have a chance to "drive" the boat.

It was a nice ride, with the lady in her Bavarian dress telling us about the area... until she dumped us out on the other side.

We thought we'd tool around out on the lake and she would bring us back!  We tried to pay for another ride back across the lake, but she was very insistent that we walk back around the lake.

That walk was very nearly a hike!  We joked that she wanted all us Americans to get some exercise.  Considering we weren't planning for it, were nearly all wearing flip-flops or sandals, and had five kids, it was an experience.  In the end, I was very glad we got to enjoy the area more than we would have if left to our own devices.  It was a beautiful day and we got some great photos in the woods and around the lake.

I also learned that day that some places mark the men's restroom as the "Pisser".  I didn't know that before, so I guess you learn something new everyday.

After our hike, we went to the Alpenhof Cafe for dinner.  This place was great!  They had a playground area for children so we ate outside with the mountains surroundig us.  Beautiful view!  The food was very good and the waiter spoke excellent English, which was a plus.
