Villa Celle
September 19, 2008
Directly after the Rome trip, we headed back to Castiglion Fiorentino and left Friday morning for a special field trip to Villa Celle. It is a private home of a (apparently) very rich art collector that has some limited tours of the property. He started out collecting your run of the mill paintings and sculpture and at some point along the way bought this property and decided he wanted site specific work done. So now he invites artists to come and pick a site on his HUGE property and do a piece of work. Despite the rainy, rainy day it was an awesome experience that I was really glad to get the chance to see. I have to admit I had daydreams of one day having a piece of work there.
My favorites were the ones that were a bit more experiential and included the element of time like the one that just looks like a glass box in a field. But what you don't understand from the pictures is that the walkway from the previous picture leads underground to a very dark winding passageway that ends in a shaft of light and a spiral staircase that exits through the glass box.
The amphitheater was also very cool as was the colorful doors one. The orange boat things were a great pop of color on such a gray day. And some of the work inside was quite beautiful too.
Over all it was a very inspiring but wet day!
