I drove to Santa Monica where I planned to find somewhere to stay. Collapsed exhausted in the Pacific Sands Motel on Ocean Avenue (or whatever it's really called) at 3.
I left the motel at 11.30am and started out on Highway 1, or the Pacific Coast Highway. I went from Santa Monica to Oxnard, where i had seen signs for a Scenic Coastal Road and followed them into the harbour area which seemed not to be for regular traffic. Had lunch, asked for directions back to the highway (no map still) and drove up to Santa Barbara. What a nice little town. I parked in the harbour area and walked along the beach and up Stearns Wharf, which is a bit touristy. Didn't stop for the 20 dollar ice cream, or whatever else was going to cost a fortune there.
Then I went down State St to the centre of town and the County House, where there is a tower that you can climb to get a panorama of the town and surroundings of mountains and sea. Beautiful. And great weather too, a little chilly but clear skies and sunshine.
Next stop was San Luis Obispo, where I would stay for the night. I arrived there around 6pm, got a motel room and watched the end of Bourne Ultimatum (again, but I love it), before heading out for some dinner (mexican) and some beers from the local Firestone brewery. They have pale ales here and they taste delicious. I will easily be able to avoid Coors and Budweiser while I'm here in North America.
