Yesterday I went hang gliding. The original plan was for an afternoon of sightseeing, but unfortunately Evelise (a friend of my portuguese teacher Marisa) couldn't escape a family gathering until later. So on the hop, as I saw them getting into the taxi to go, I joined a hang gliding trip!
The journey up to the launch point was easily the scariest part of it, since we nearly crashed into an overtaking vehicle, but when we got to the top ther were spectacular views down onto one of Rio's beaches, but not the Copacabana or Ipanema because they're too busy to land a hang glider on. A quick practice launch and we were up on the launch platform, basically the sloping wooden roof of the viewing platform on a mountain in the Tijuca national park. We sprinted down it and then launched and from then on it was just nice views and very little adrenaline. So was it worth it? Jury's still out on that.
In the evening we went to a funk party in one of Rio's favelas, their word for the shanty towns. It was wicked! Big beats, an interesting dance competition and even fireworks inside the club! No photos though, I'm afraid, since they don't let you take in cameras and i don't think it's a good idea to have valuables on you in that part of town.
