Our nine-day camping trip in Nova Scotia, with not much more than tent, sleeping bag, and dog.

Cheticamp

Another one those French-speaking places, Cheticamp is on the western side of Cape Breton.  It is 45 miles from here to Prince Edward Island across the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Heading out of town, we really needed a place to set up camp.  We came upon a beautiful grassy hill with a great view of the water and accompanying sunset.  The lady who owns the land was working in her garden.  We stopped and asked if we could camp out here.  She gave us the OK.

Here you can walk right up to edge of the cliffs, and look straight down to the water, maybe 100 feet below.  The cliffs are home to countless seagulls and other sea birds.  It's quite a sight to see them land on their perches, and to hear them all squawking.  The ledges have alot of messy white stuff splattered on them, but I don't remember the smell being bad.

When breaking camp, the wind nearly took the tent away!

I can't think of many places to equal the serenity and beauty of Cheticamp, a place where man and nature can still coexist peacefully.
