The Last Hurrah
December 22, 2005
These last few days have been a little strange.. People I have lived with four months or so have been dispersing to all parts of the globe.. Most I will probably never see again.. Some I may, we'll have to see what happens.
Last night was Mike Oh's birthday, but it was a little depressing because it was effectively the last time we would be all together - in all seriousness. There was lots of talk and a bit of drinking - more drinking by others than myself because I'm a sensible young man these days :P ..This was followed with tears from people with the realisation that these were "goodbyes" and not "see you laters".
In any case, after rucking about 38kg of shit on my back to Sinchon, I caught the subway two stops down where I had another 15 minute walk that resulted in me moving into Kim's Guesthouse again - the place I stayed in when I first arrived in Seoul. I'm departing as I arrived; via Hapjeong. Surprisingly the owner remembered me, commented on how I now speak "very good Korean" - bah.. liar! She gave me a discount, and was flabbergasted to find out that "another good man had been taken" when she found out I was married - she thought that my interest in the Korean language was sparked because of a new found friend; a Korean girlfriend that is.
After a little rest I headed off to Yongsan to get some VCD's of a few of the my favourite Korean movies - only found one, hah.. But I did get 3 others that sound alright - they can't do any damage to my Korean anyway. Also asked a few questions about electronic dictionaries. I don't need a new one, but I was curious for if I ever begin to learn Japanese or Mandarin as they have dictionaries that cover Korean <> English, Japanese <> Korean, and Chinese <> Korean. And believe it or not, they were only about $60 more than the Korean <> English dictionary I bought when I arrived. At least I know for future reference now.
On my way home I got some delicious sundae (순대), since I can't really remember it being served in too many places in Perth. I have to get my fill before I leave.
Tonight I'm heading out to Sinchon with the boys for the last time *sigh* ...Dinner with Peter and Will.. and possibly Mike, if he can get away from his Grandparents. It's going to be a sad time.. but at least I can assume that I'll probably be seeing Peter and Will again.. Not just because they're going to be in Korea for another 18 months or so, but because they both live in New York - unlike most of the other people; spread all over the USA and Europe - as well as other part of the globe. And whilst I've never really had an interest in going to America, one of the few places I figure I must go to is New York because of the art world. Now there's the added bonus of knowing a few people there - a big plus.
One full day remaining in Seoul.. I want to return.. Will I return?
That's the question.
