The Mountain State. Wild and Wonderful. If they could flatten it out, it would be as big as Texas.

Now a National Historical Park, Harper's Ferry is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.  It is in West Virginia, and borders Maryland and Virginia.

Many of the buildings are recorded in the National Register of Historic Places.

Originally, Harper saw the need for a ferry to get across the river, and it was used until the first bridge was built.

Once an important industrial and transportation center, it now serves as a tourist destination.  Harper's Ferry is an easy day trip from Washington, DC.

Abolitionist John Brown raided the arsenal in 1859, a move that helped touch-off the Civil War.

You won't be able to drive right through town anymore.  Leave the car in the parking lot, and walk or ride a bike.  Take in the history of it all.  There are plenty of shops and exhibits.

The train depot, built by the B&O Railroad, is still an operating stop on the Amtrak Capitol Limited, and MARC Brunswick Line.

The 100-year-old historic Hilltop House Hotel is closed for renovations.
