Belize City - a big surprise

Who ever said the capital of any country should be the best place to visit must have been nuts or never made it to Belize City. Belize city is dirty, poor, and there are far too many dangers to be there on your own or walk around during dusk or later. Scary even.. And I consider myself a fairly well-traveled person.

I arrived at Belize City from Chetumal, Mexico (which was a pleasant trip and very easy - recommended!!!) at around 7pm. You think that is ok but the place is not a place to walk around. I had the locals (who all followed me down the dark streets) convinced that I had been there before (I walked fast, self-assured, head high, goal-oriented and it worked). The talk went fast so within 5 blocks the people that were still following me told the others dont borther she has been here before... Phew!!

Got from the bus terminal over the little bridge and made a left on Albert Street, crossed over the Swing Bridge (to your right on Albert) and 2 blocks later you see the police station. Riht after that on your left hand side is Three Sisters Hotel. It is nothing fancy but clean enough, towels, soap, and plenty of fans for a cheapish rate. The must better option (but also much more expensice) would have been to go to the Radison Hotel to the right off the Swing Bridge (all the way to the water and the little lighthouse) and instead of lodging there, go across the street to the Great While Hotel (next to the bakery) and get a super nice, clean, a la luxury hotel for $100 US. Best option though, would be to drop Belize City and instead go straight to one of the islands from the ferry station (to the right off the Swing Bridge almost right there on the corner). It is easy to get to Caye Caulker or San Pedro (Ambergris caye) from there. On Caye Caulker everything is cheaper (including the snorkeling and diving trips that usually happens outside San Pedro - Go figure!!)

Whatever you do - do not walk out at night (or whenever it gets to be dusk time) in Belize City unless you are a bigger group. They steal everything and tons of reports show just that. Not worth loosing your camera or life for a 5 Belize dollars for a taxi ($2.50 us).

Belize islands are beautiful and well worth visiting....
