The hot, hot sun in Palaneque is going to make you want an ice cream but whatever you do, do NOT buy ice cream from the ice cream shop right next to Hotel Shalom and Hotel Nikte-Ha. The owner there is a a typical "lets get all we can frm the gringos" kind of guy and eventhough the 3 pesos really didnt make or break me, Im disgusted with the simple lie (even after I questioned it) and would rather put my ice cream down and go elsewhere than contribute to his wrip-off the tourists. DO NOT GO THERE, please....

Palenque is nice. A small but pleasant town with lots of colors and generally really nice people. There is this nice place called Panchan close to the ruins. It is a backpacker/hippie heaven. There are several (maybe 6 or 7) cheap cabanas hotels (I paid 200 pesos for the night with 2 beds, own shower, towels, etc.). The area is nice. Set in the forest and shielded from the heavy sunbeams. Have a fab dinner there (the food is good and cheap) and talk to the tourist people about trips around the area. But dont waste your money getting a tour to the ruins. Take the Collectivo (public shuttle bus) and just hop on for 10 pesos and say "a las Ruinas, por favor" and they will drop you there in a few minutes. When at the ruins you can elect to hire a guide (it seemed worth it) and walk around the amazing ruins and see the history of MesoAmerica.

If you are staying in town (Palenque) check out Nikte-Ha Hotel (descent, clean but with some tricky things like no volume botton for the tv and no toilet seat) but there are towels and soap and A/C. Worth 350 pesos.

Cancun - if you are going to Cancun, dont waste your money staying on the strip. There are plenty of cool little hotels with pool, A/C and all for much less downtown and it takes a few pesos to get onto the strip with a taxi. If you can, avoid Cancun all together and make your way to Playa Del Carmen. It is 100 times nicer than Cancun will ever be (for a chilled out kind of person). There are excellent restaurants (on the beach even) and the people are 10 times nicer than in Cancun.
