Rafting down the Kali Gandaki River: day three
October 20, 2000
Today, we encountered some rapids that were small enough to swim through. There was one rapid that everyone seemed to fall out of their rafts at. For a moment, the Kali Gandaki was littered with UWC students bobbing up and down in the water. Our guides, Brent and Gary, who were in kayaks, had a run for their money as they paddled around collecting everyone and returning them to their respective rafts!
When the rafting was over, we had a five hour bus journey ahead of us. We made a toilet stop opposite a Nepalese pornographic magazine shop in a little village where Michael bought us all cokes. We were just about to board the bus again when we realised the shop keeper wanted his bottles back; so we had to skull our cokes right there and then!
Our group was split between two buses again, so every so often it was fun to stick our heads out of the window and wave at the other bus. It was very dusty though, and I ended up getting a mild case of conjunctivitis (or something like that)! Served me right!
Also, we stopped a lot because we were having problems with the tires.
We spent the night in Pokhara at Snowlands Hotel.
