Day 14 - Cape of Good Hope
September 30, 2008
I took the day to drive down to the Cape of Good Hope. It's a great drive. I took the M3 down through Kalk Bay and then on through Simonstown.
Kalk Bay is a great little town along the route to Cape Point. All kinds of local shops and places to eat. I recommend Olympia Cafe. Simonstown is where the penguins are. Although apparently they didn't get the memo that I was in town. I expected to see hundreds of penguins but alas... only about 20 or so were on the rocks when I arrived.
Cape Point is awesome. It is considered the point at which the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Oceans meet. Interestingly enough, on one side the waves crash against the rocks with amazing force and on the other side... it seems incredibly calm. You could spend a full day in the park hiking if you like. The Lighthouse is interesting but very touristy. Go early to beat the rush.
Whales were visible all along the drive. It seemed like every time I rounded a bend there were people stopped checkin' out the whales. I also recommend taking the scenic Boyes Drive. There are signs as you drive down the M3 for it. It's a really nice drive.
