Day 11 - Travel to Gansbaai
September 27, 2008
Today was a travel day. Drove to Gansbaai which took me almost 5.5 hrs. It was a fantastic drive though. The Garden Route is some of the most scenic terrain. I recommend that you get a good car (I splurged and rented a Mercedes) and take your time. The next time I come back to South Africa, I'm going to spend more time along the route. Considering this was a bit of an adventure trek and I had places to be, I did not get a chance to really take my time. I'll do that the next trip!
Gansbaai is an old fishing town and has that kind of charm. Danger Point is right where the HMT Birkenhead when down. On that particular shipwreck in 1852, Captain Salmond ordered all the men to hold fast and that the women and children were to exit the ship first. Most all of them survived while most of the men died. Hence... Women and Children first!

A great place to stay...
I was referred to stay at the Anlo Guesthouse by the Shark Dive company I had booked with. And what a find!
Upon entry, you are warmly greeted by the official welcoming committee... Lilla & Kiki. Lilla is a 7 yo Bulldog and Kiki a 5 yo Pug. They were great! The hosts, Annelie and Ezette were fantastic and were quick to point out local favorites and things to do. The staff was nice and accomodating.
My room had a fantastic view of the ocean and you could even see the wales playing off in the distance. The room was neat and clean and I did not have a need of anything additional.
It is conveniently located just minutes (you could even walk) from the center of town where you can easily book a Shark Dive or other adventure.
I definitely recommend this as an option while traveling the Garden Route in South Africa.
