Didn't go out last night; just passed out cold. Slept approximately 12 hours. Feeling bummed about my camera situation. Walked to Railay West today, and it is BEAUTIFUL. No camera luck. I can't believe I'm stuck with only the camera on my phone to capture this place. I'll try a few more stores, but this place doesn't seem to have an actual town like Haad Rin. Just a cluster of resorts and a few little bars/restaurants.
Was sunny in the morning, so I'll get up early in the morning tomorrow to try to catch the sun. The girls at this restaurant seem to be cross dressers or something.
12pm Breakfast continued, Diamond Cave Restaurant
Hoping caffeine will help my mood. Still no camera luck. Two glasses of iced tea. Nut salad. Maybe I will go for a swim. :) Back to the room to look for my old batteries for the camera; maybe they will bring it to life.
The tides here are a trip. Muddy guck for all afternoon that goes very far out to sea. In the morning, water is all the way into the restaurants that are along the beach!
?-o-clock in the afternoon, Phra Nang Beach
Amazing how my mood changed once I was able to get my camera working! Not only is it working, but it actually loaded a whole roll of film instead of only 8 frames!
My first stop with the functional camera was Diamond Cave, just above my resort, hence the resort name.
Now I am at Phra Nang, which is surrounded by islands in deep turquoise water. I swam out to a little island--very pretty! Maybe I can wait for tide to go out and then walk my camera across. Wow. Definitely time to shave again. Definitely in vacation mode. Random observations.
Seems that corn on the cob is a popular food in Railay. I see it everywhere, even on the beach! I want to find the lagoon that you have to hike to. I think it is near the south end of this beach, but I might want better shoes. Maybe I'll try to go tomorrow.
People are so cool here! I just got giddy with my camera and totally left my back pack full of important stuff on the beach for quite some time.
Renting a kayak would be fun too. So little time! Definitely not looking forward to being back in Bangkok. Not really looking forward to being home, either. Too much work and drama. I like affording the nice things though. I like playing music, too.
Check Stone Bar today for a guitar--there is supposed to be something going on there.
Dinner time, Rock Bar
I kind of kicked ass with camera today and my feet are really sore! Wandered all over the Phra Nang beach and barefoot over a small rocky island taking photos--all this after walking to West beach and among the resorts looking for cameras.
This spot is culturally significant, as it is where couples come to pray for fertility. They leave all manner of phallic symbols in the mouth of the cave, in hopes that it will help get them pregnant. While I was on the beach, several chefs from one of the nearby restaurants stopped by to leave offerings of food. I'm not sure what this is supposed to bring them, unless they are leaving bananas and cucumbers.
On my way back along that path in the late afternoon, there were monkeys! My first time seeing wild monkeys. So cute!
Apparently there is an open mic night here today, at Rock Bar, not at Stone Bar (which is down the trail), but hardly anyone is here, so not sure how that will go.
Yay, more fucking couples. I know I shouldn't care, but it gets old. These little bars are actually pretty rad...the ones a bit lower have some trippy lights and look ready to go off partying, but not really anyone around. Too early? I could take a nap and come back later, but I just want to have energy to go to the lagoon tomorrow, and Railay West again. Sounds like there are a bunch of Americans who work here--tour guiding, working the bar, etc. Everyone here is so attractive and in good shape! And young! Strange.
I guess I was more into Haad Rin because it seemed there was less separation between the Thais and the foreigners than over here.
So I'll never see any of these people again, so what does it matter if I make an ass of myself? Take a fucking chance, aerynn! Life ain't getting any longer. Of course, chance is how you end up in some pretty bad situations, too. Some things you just cannot control. Here I am in fucking Thailand by myself! Way to go. I can go anywhere I want to.
Just ordered my first alcohol of this whole trip. Vodka tonic w/ a lime. Over a week on the trip with no alcohol.
Apparently it makes me spend money more easily--I just sent two text messages that will probably cost a fortune. But email costs money too so I'm not sure which is worse. What to play.... Returning? Mountain Song? Mokuleia? Alone? We'll see.
