First day traveling, got very little sleep, took off from Chicago to Guatemala City w/ a stop in Atlanta. Left Chicago at 6am, arrived in Guatemala City around 1pm I think. Then through immigration. Then we had to get on a bus quickly to Panajachel, we paid a taxi driver to bring us to a bus terminal, but in the end he said, "hey, I get you to a bus that's already left the terminal so you won't have to wait". We didn't understand what this entailed, and eventually got stuck on one of the 2nd class "chicken buses", which are just schoolbuses. They tossed our luggage on the roof, and we were in the bus before we knew it. We didn't want to take those buses, but considering the time (the last bus would have been at 3pm, and we weren't sure if we could have gotten a 1st class ticket in time), we were nervous the first hour or two, but then we realized it would be okay. the fact that some fellow travelers (from Denmark) also assuaged our fears. we got to Panajachel after 4 hours on semi-bumpy road (they're expanding the 2 lane road to a 4 way modern highway, but still lot's of raggednessness) Arrived at like 6pm, checking into our hotel, got some food, then it started raining like crazy. Ran to the hotel. We were gonna check out the night life, but having slept only 3 hours, we collapsed and slept.
