I was hanging out in Pasadena for a few days prior to visiting my folks this trip and turns out, my close friend Jose was also going to be in the Los Angeles area this week on military leave, visiting his family! Jose and I had not seen each other in a few years due to his deployment and moving, etc. It worked out that I had some free time during the day and being that it was Jose's Birthday, I invited him up to Pasadena to hang out and wander around Old Town.
I don't know Pasadena all that well but told him to pick whatever food he wanted and I would treat him for a nice lunch....we passed a couple sushi places and he said, "ooooo, let's do it.
I've never been to Kabuki but Melanie (mellemel8) has mentioned it is good so we gave it a shot. Got Jose to sit at the sushi bar and watched his face as all the raw fish filled the cases. We started off easy - Albacore nigiri. I also snuck in an eel and avocado roll which he ended up liking. Apparently he missed the eel part when I ordered it because he was eating the last piece when he mentioned he would need to mentally prepare to eat octopus and/or eel.
Decided to kick things up a notch and asked him if he was down for a quail egg shooter! Whoo Hoo! He loved that and we ended up doing a couple rounds of those which would've been fine by themselves but add the large bottle of nigori sake we had and I was a pretty happy camper! Being brave, I spotted Hamachi Toro on the menu....mmmmm, Toro is the fatty part of the fish and always the most delicious.
All in all, he did good and we had a nice time. I just know for future reference that we will only be trying California Rolls or the like kind just to ensure no more breaking out in a cold sweat! LOL.
After that, we wandered a bit around Old Town, well, more like poor Jose followed me around while I ran an errand to buy a gift and goofed around in a couple stores.....eventually sidetracked by the sign that said "Chocolate Cafe". LOL. OMG, what a fun chocolate store - imported chocolates from Belgium...YUM! $34 per lb worth of yum! We got to sample a few and Jose ended up with a free chocolate covered strawberry when I mentioned it was his birthday...hee hee. I bought a few chocolates to bring to my parents and we were off in search of dessert nirvana.....CUPCAKES!
Poor Jose is clueless to the foodie adventures of me and my fellow TB/RL friends. Cupcake wars are an essential part of our day...
We had a great afternoon and said our goodbyes as he was headed to Orange County to hang with friends and I had plans that night up in the Valley. Fun times....can only imagine the trouble we will get into Sunday night at Angel's (Knead2travel) OC Bonfire! :D :D
