No Jose, that's not how you use chopsticks!

I was hanging out in Pasadena for a few days prior to visiting my folks this trip and turns out, my close friend Jose was also going to be in the Los Angeles area this week on military leave, visiting his family!  Jose and I had not seen each other in a few years due to his deployment and moving, etc.  It worked out that I had some free time during the day and being that it was Jose's Birthday, I invited him up to Pasadena to hang out and wander around Old Town.

I don't know Pasadena all that well but told him to pick whatever food he wanted and I would treat him for a nice lunch....we passed a couple sushi places and he said, "ooooo, let's do it.

Mackeral and Albacore
"  I didn't realize until we were walking into Kabuki that Jose only eats California Rolls! LOL.  Uh oh!  He said he'd be game to try some raw stuff so I figured let's go for it!  Everyone else I've taken for real sushi (vs the gateway sushi he ate) ends up loving it and becoming huge sushi lovers!

I've never been to Kabuki but Melanie (mellemel8) has mentioned it is good so we gave it a shot.  Got Jose to sit at the sushi bar and watched his face as all the raw fish filled the cases.  We started off easy - Albacore nigiri.  I also snuck in an eel and avocado roll which he ended up liking.  Apparently he missed the eel part when I ordered it because he was eating the last piece when he mentioned he would need to mentally prepare to eat octopus and/or eel.

Cheers - 2nd round of quail egg shooters!
...I told him after and he didn't even realize it.  LOL.  As for the albacore, he looked pained trying to swallow it.  He was a trooper though and didn't spit it out!  He recognizes it is all in his mind! LOL.  I told him to try a little wasabi and he sampled it and made a horrible face, exclaiming, "Eeeew, this is what evil tastes like!"

Decided to kick things up a notch and asked him if he was down for a quail egg shooter!  Whoo Hoo!  He loved that and we ended up doing a couple rounds of those which would've been fine by themselves but add the large bottle of nigori sake we had and I was a pretty happy camper! Being brave, I spotted Hamachi Toro on the menu....mmmmm, Toro is the fatty part of the fish and always the most delicious.

Spicy Tuna crunch roll
Most people like the Hamachi (yellowtail) so we decided to do one more round of nigiri.  Unfortunately, Jose literally broke out in a cold sweat while chewing it.  HA HA HA.  One more roll we had ordered was a spicy tuna crunch roll and when he saw it, he immediately questioned whether it was raw.  He poked at it and said if it moved, he wasn't eating it. As he's poking it, he says "Hey, I think I just ate your cousin a little bit ago!" I about spit out my roll and the sushi chef even laughed a little.  Obviously, it didn't move so he managed to eat it and enjoyed it (not knowing there was raw tuna in there...hee hee).

All in all, he did good and we had a nice time.  I just know for future reference that we will only be trying California Rolls or the like kind just to ensure no more breaking out in a cold sweat! LOL.

The Chocolate Cafe

After that, we wandered a bit around Old Town, well, more like poor Jose followed me around while I ran an errand to buy a gift and goofed around in a couple stores.....eventually sidetracked by the sign that said "Chocolate Cafe".  LOL.  OMG, what a fun chocolate store - imported chocolates from Belgium...YUM!  $34 per lb worth of yum!  We got to sample a few and Jose ended up with a free chocolate covered strawberry when I mentioned it was his birthday...hee hee.  I bought a few chocolates to bring to my parents and we were off in search of dessert nirvana.....CUPCAKES!

Poor Jose is clueless to the foodie adventures of me and my fellow TB/RL friends.  Cupcake wars are an essential part of our day...

OMG..my favorite shirt ever I think!! LOL
...I had found this place while on the phone with Melanie and decided to check it out.  Sadly, no sugar free for Mel but OMG, their cupcakes were amazing.  I bought the seasonal berry ones for my parents and I and got Jose a  cookies and cream one!  I won't mention the little "incident" with the chocolate lover's one I bought for a gift.....let's just say the crash test ratings on their cupcakes are high! LOL.

We had a great afternoon and said our goodbyes as he was headed to Orange County to hang with friends and I had plans that night up in the Valley.  Fun times....can only imagine the trouble we will get into Sunday night at Angel's (Knead2travel) OC Bonfire! :D :D
