Hotel Ivan in Sibenik

It's gotten very expensive to travel the normal way of renting a car and staying in hotels so we're trying something new. We're traveling around Eastern Europe by train and staying in apartments. Later we'll join a tour group. It's definately cheaper but does it work? Join us and find out.

We arrive at Sibenik just in time for dinner at Hotel Ivan in Sibenik.  This is one of a cluster of Soviet style architecture hotels called (in aggregate) Hotel Solaris.  From the exterior, it’s not promising although the buffet dinner is okay.  We notice lots of people wandering around in matching blue shirts.  Since most of them are smoking (the lobby has clouds of smoke – something I haven’t seen in the US for decades) I’m puzzled about who these people are.  My first thought had been a sports team but the smoking seemed to make that unlikely.  I finally decided they must be bowling teams (it was the only sport I could think of that might go with heavy smoking).  When asked, all the blue-shirted people thought we were really funny;  they were a  “workers group” which I guess means a union.
