Overlooking the Homer spit

Today was the day to search out what appeared to be the elusive eagle.  We started out by driving the East End Road hoping to find the state park.  Well, too bad you can’t drive there, so back we came.  A geocache lead us to Skyline Drive which gave us a wonderful view from the top of the hill overlooking Homer and the Spit.

From there we returned to the spit hoping to find some eagles.  They were there, just not in the great numbers of the winter.  We discovered that they liked to sit on the light towers around the deep water boat harbor.  I guess this gives them a real “bird’s eye view”.  We also found that they like to sit on the beach at low tide.  We usually only found one at a time but found at least one every time we looked.  The eagles are still here, just scattered.

The weather was nice and as we looked to the west there, 72 miles away was Mount Augustine.  This is a very active volcano which erupted in 2005 and 2006.  To this day it is still emitting steam from its vent.

We took a little time to look in the shops and then found several otters swimming behind the shops on the ocean side.  Later one was very close to shore doing summersaults and washing his face.

After dinner we returned to the spit to look for eagles and to check out the sunset.

Tomorrow we take a boat trip to Otter Cove Resort.
