out the day by heading to the ChilkatState Park to see what
was there. We drove to the boat ramp
hoping to find some eagles hanging out there but they seemed to be
elsewhere. From there we stopped at the
information/observation building to find two glaciers, Davidson and Rainbow,
across the ChilkatRiver. We also had a Rufous hummingbird flitting
around as there was a feeder hanging above our heads.He/she would fly in grab a drink and fly off
as we tried to capture a picture. After
much patience we finally got some shots of the little flyer.
remained scarce, making brief appearances as they fly quickly overhead.Giving up on the state park as a source of
eagles, we made our way back to Haines, to TlingitPark,
where there is an eagle’s nest.Mom or
Dad flew in shortly after we arrived and sat tucked into a tree. There was no activity in the nest.
was well past lunch time, we returned to the trailer for a bite to eat, and
then headed off in the opposite direction toward ChilkootLake. We were no more successful here with the
eagles although the scenery was nice complete with a fisherman. As we were leaving the area, we noticed a
number of people looking toward the river from the side of the road.Who was there? It was Gimpy, the grizzly bear.We had been told about Gimpy when we
arrived. He is a grizzly bear who was
shot and walks with a limp.He frequents
the river in the afternoon.Sure enough
there he was.He didn’t seem to mind the
people, out of their cars, watching him.He would look up occasionally then go back to eating.I did look around to see if there was someone
who would run slower than me if he started our way. After spending quite a bit of time eating, he
finally crossed the river and went into the woods.
It was now
past dinner time, so back to the trailer for dinner.
Tomorrow we will continue our exploring, perhaps
getting to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.
