Moving on to Anchorage

Eagle at Beluga Point

We had a very short drive today.  Originally we were just going to stay in Wasilla for the whole time, but with the price of gas, $4.44 in Anchorage, we thought we should move closer to where we would be exploring.  The drive was a mere 40 miles.  We were set up quickly and soon we were out and about in Anchorage.  It has been so long since we have been in a large city. It was unusual to have to worry about traffic and traffic lights.

Our first stop was to see if we could find Mt. Susitna.  This mountain across Knik Arm of the Cook Inlet is also known as the Sleeping Lady.  Legend has it that she belongs to a race of giants and is sleeping until there is world peace.  She was barely visible in the morning, but by late evening the clouds had lifted somewhat and she can be seen in the distance.

Then it was on to the city to stop at a few of the shops and catch a few geocaches in the area.  There is even a cache in the Visitor’s Center.

The next stop was Beluga Point along Turnagain Arm.  I had timed the low tide and worked out the timing for the bore tide.  Well, my time was for a point farther south and apparently there was no bore tide today.  Instead we were treated to a visit by a bald eagle who sat in the tree top until three ravens harassed him until he flew off.

On the way back to Anchorage we stopped off at Potter’s Marsh where there are boardwalks for bird watching.  Here we spotted a red-necked Glebe floating along with her baby on her back.

Then a stop at Sam’s Club, before returning to the trailer to get ready for a geocaching event held by several Maryland cachers who are visiting Alaska to geocache.  As usual there was plenty of good food and we met a number of local Alaskan cachers.  It was nice to put faces to names we only see as the cache hider.

Tomorrow we will try once again to catch a bore tide.
