Halfway Down the Cassier

Knowing we did not have a long drive today, we started the day slowly.  I walked to the nearby grocery store to pick up a few items we needed before closing up the trailer.  Then it was down the Cassier.  This is a road whose reputation precedes it.  It is known for its gravel portions and bumpy pavement.  We found, however, that the road was not all that bad so far.  We did have a number of gravel patches early on and then 16 miles of gravel road, but all in all it was relatively smooth.  Dust was the biggest problem.

The scenery was nicer than the last time we drove it three years ago as for most the drive the sun was shining and the sky was blue.  The Cassier Mountains loomed ahead as we drove and lakes lined the sides of the road.  Unfortunately there was often no way to stop and photograph the lakes.  Most of the mountain shots were “drive by shootings” through the windshield.

We stopped at Jade City to take a look at what was available.  Most of the jade in the world comes from the mountains of British Columbia.

After setting up the trailer and getting some lunch, we made a side trip down a “road less traveled”.  This road, Telegraph Road, leads to Telegraph Creek, a town established during the gold rush.  Since the road is dirt and has many steep grades and hairpin curves, we opted to only go halfway.  This gave us a view of Mt. Edziza, a dormant volcano, and a lush green valley far below the hill top.  Then it was back for dinner.

Tomorrow we will get to Hyder and, hopefully, the bears.
