Skagway lies about 100 miles south of Whitehorse, so we decided that instead of packing up and pulling the trailer down to Skagway, we would leave the trailer in Whitehorse and drive to Skagway for the day.

One of the nicest parts of Skagway is the drive in.  The scenery is beautiful if the day is clear.

Along the drive there are mountains, both bare and snow covered, lakes, bright blue and emerald green, and waterfalls.  The road passes through White Pass, which is the route the prospectors in 1898 took to cross the mountains on the way to the gold mines in Dawson.  A two hour drive can take four or more if you stop for all of the photo ops.

Since today dawned clear, we climbed in the car and made our way to Skagway.  On the drive down not only did we have nice scenery, but a black bear entertained us for a while walking along the road.  Once in Skagway we joined then throngs of people from the five cruise ships in town and the one in Haines that had passengers coming to Skagway on the fast ferry.  It was wall to wall people.  This, however, is the source of income for the town of Skagway.

We ate lunch at the Red Onion Saloon which was the local brothel in the gold rush days and has been restored to a bar/restaurant and brothel rooms remain upstairs although for tours not their original purpose.

After completing a few geocaches in town we finally wended our way back to Whitehorse.  On our way back we saw our fourth porcupine of the trip.  Having never seen a porcupine ever, we have now seen four in our travels.

Tomorrow we will do some shopping (Whitehorse has a WalMart), and then explore the town.
