Got one

The only real reason to come to Hyder is to watch the bears at Fish Creek.

Coming to shore to eat
The town itself is pretty much a ghost town with just a few gift shops and restaurants along with a motel and campground.  I am not sure anyone lives there year round.  The bears come for the salmon that come up the creek to spawn.  As I mentioned yesterday the number of salmon have been low and the bears have not been coming to the creek.

Last night’s rain changed all that.  After sleeping in for the first time in a number of days, we decided since the rain was still coming down to get our laundry done.  The only laundromat is in the hotel in the Stewart, so while we did our laundry we had lunch at the hotel’s café.  After finishing the laundry, we made our way up to Fish Creek.  When we arrived we noticed a marked increase in the number of fish swimming up the creek from 4 yesterday to at least five times that many in the first 5 minutes we were there.  The fish continued to arrive as the afternoon went on.  Maybe the bears would come.  Several bears had been down in the morning.  Within about an hour the first bear showed up and actually caught 3 fish.  Over the next five hours five more bears showed up, all of them attempting to catch fish, some successfully and some not.  Several of the bears appeared to be young, perhaps last year’s cubs.

Finally after the rain started to fall again, we decided that it was time for dinner and headed back to the trailer.

Tomorrow we will return to be entertained by the bears.
