Our beloved Pooky
Our day started out on a sad note as our little dog, Pooky, who had been ill for some time, had to leave us. We are sad that she is not going to Alaska with us for the second time. She had Cushing's disease and a breathing problem with a collapsed trachea. Over the last two weeks she became worse, gasping for air. Fearing she would not make a three month trip successfully, I took her to the vet Saturday morning before we left. X-rays revealed a mass closing her trachea and misshaping it. She was also only breating with one lung due to a growth that was pressing on the other. She was slowly sufficating. This would have been a agonizing, painful death since there was no treatment for it. So, we decided she had suffered enough. She will be sadly missed. We are dedicating our trip to her. We will miss her flipping her water and food bowls, looking up at us for her treats, and especially miss her curled up at our feet at night keeping us warm.
After getting started we had a safe and uneventful trip to Groton, NY where were left our cat, Ember, with our daughter for the summer. We will spend the night in the Yellow Lantern Campground. Tomorrow we will start heading west.
