Flying across the dijk like the wind

We began our ride in Hippo (with some rain) and rode across the Afsluitdijk (30 km barrier dam built between 1927 & 1932 that closes the Zuyder Zee). The winds was at our backs and strong, so we all accomplished speeds we rarely see on our computers - up to 30 mph. Lars and Larry crossed the dijk while the rest bussed it to Makkum to see the porcelain painters. We got on our bikes in Makkum and met them in Workum and visited the art museum with paintings of Jopi Huisman. This artist painted common things like old shoes and mended clothing as well as portraits of desperate people. Lunch included bratwurst and apple pancakes.
Back on the cycles through Bolsward to Gaastmeer. We went to a brewery and enjoyed their beer and did some whiskey tasting. Chuck was all smiles :-) :-) Several purchases were made for the return trip. We drove to the port city of Harlingen and enjoyed mussels for dinner. Mussels were served in the traditional style and also baked with garlic and bacon. It was late when we returned to our cozy rooms at the B & B.
Ride: Hippolytushoef - Afsluitdijk - Makkum - Workum - Bolsware - Gaastmeer
Total ride for the day 48 km (Chuck, Ken & Diane), 78 km Lars & Larry.
