Cyclists were delighted to have another sunny day with lighter winds. The great weather brought out lots of cyclists on the fietspad (bike path). The morning ride was 34 km and included some small villages, churches, a war monument with a beautiful view of the Ijsselmeer (inland sea) and several sailboats including some 3 and 4 masted boats and a cemetary with graves for pilots (known and unknown) shot down during WWII. We saw our last Friesland horse and Diane bought some Friesland clogs for gardening back home. We also began memorizing route numbers which made finding our turns easier.
Lunch included sampling Poffertjes (dough in a small round shape fried in butter and and dusted with cinnameon and powdered sugar) yum! A few of us also tried Loempia (an egg roll like item stuffed with vegetables and a little meat).
The afternnon ride was 44 km and took us through a natural park full of beautiful trees and mosquitos. We finished our ride at a bar named "Mosquito Bite". We sat outdoors and tried our first Genever (Dutch gin) and eating snacks. In Giethoorn we took a boat ride on the canal and lake until dark looking at houses and enjoying the birds. We ate around 9:30 and faded into dreamland.
Ride: Gaastmeer - Hindelopen - Gaasterland - Aloten - Spanga - Giethoorn
We have been cycling and touring and have not had time to write. Our leader is really pushing us to see and do everything. No surprises there! Also, many of the smaller towns do not have Internet access in the hotel. We plan a shorter ride today and laundry since after a week everyone needs to freshen up their wardrobe. The sore muscles and butts are have hit us, but we're still a happy group after some sleep. At this point we've ridden approximately 367 km, and Lars and Larry have done around 397 km.
