a map over the Pilgrim trail..

I had been thinking about driving to Balke Church for some time now, but hadn't gotten around to it. Then I decided I would go this morning, but then I had to go get a new car. When that was done, I took the car for a ride trying to get to know it and didn't take my cam with me. Afterwards I was tired and fell asleep on couch and forgot all about driving to Balke. But when I woke up again, the sun was still shining and I figured I could go now, and catch the evening light.

Balke church is about 5 - 10 minutes drive from where I live, and that's a perfect distance for a short trip out in the evening.

The church is built in 1170 and is an Middle Age Church. It was added on in 1754 and that's the church as we can see it today. It was restored in 1967. The church is renowned for it's collection of saint sculptures, which was probably removed after the reformation. Several of the sculptures are kept at the University Museum of Antiquities. There are pictures of these sculptures inside the church.

This church is also in the path of the Pilgrim trail from Oslo to Nidaros in Trondheim.

It's quite funny how you can live at a place and not knowing all the history connected to that area. As I have found since I moved here, it's lots of historic places within a reasonable short distance.
