Today was our drive home (too short of a weekend!!). We went a little out of the way to stop at Kitty Hawk, something I've been wanting to see ever since we planned to move up here. It was a lot of fun! We went to the little museum near the entrance first. It had great displays - very easy to follow timeline, with journal entries, background on other flight researchers/experimenters, and pictures. Lots of fun to refresh my memory of this historical event!
Then we headed out to the flight markers - stones placed to mark the landing spots for each of the first three flights that the Wright brothers completed in 1903. It was easy to see exactly how far each flight had been, but somehow still hard to believe that the first flight of 120 feet seemed impressive - it looks so short in real life!! In fact, it seems more like "Falling - with style" (Buzz Lightyear).
Anyway.... we walked up to the memorial pylon on Big Kill Devils Hill, which was really cool, and gave an awesome view of the coastline and town and back down toward the flight area. If you're interested in the memorial or refreshing your memory about the Wrights as I was, here are some cool links: http://www.nps.gov/wrbr/
Then - onward! The drive home... boy, Shadow sure was glad to see us! He must have been lonely while we were gone having fun. All in all I loved this Outer Banks weekend - if you have the chance, I highly recommend going! I just wish we could have stayed another day...
