I had not visited Polen in 20 years so I was about time. This resulted in a quick visit between X-mas and New Year. I have always loved to vist capitals and I had not yet seen Warsaw. I was a cold week but it was away from home....

Warsaw

Palace of Culture and Science in the mist

My girlfriend Kaija had never been to Polen and this was once again one of my very spontaneous moves. I was sitting and checking airfares and there it was - a very cheap flight from Copenhagen to Warsaw - a quick look at hotels.com and here it was - a trip to Warsaw.

Kaija was home in Estonia for Christmas and I was home with my family in Copenhagen. Kaija had a very quick visit to Tartu, and she was already back the 26th. 27th we were packed and ready to take our things to Warsaw.

Everything went really smooth to Warsaw - it was very quiet everywhere. The airport in Warsaw is not that big but it was efficient - we got a hold of a Taxi - and we didn't get cheated that much..:-D

Since the flight tickets were very cheap I had booked us in on a very reasonable price at the Mariott - which is something I rarely do - but it was really off season, so I think they were quiet happy just to have somebody there.

The main reason that I booked us there was that they had a pool and we both really needed to relax. The first thing we got in our hand when we arrived at the reception was a note stating that the pool was out of order! But it is a nice hotel and they booked us in a room high up (32nd floor) in the building so we had a great view - overlooking the central station and the Palace of Culture and Science - a russian donation to the Polish people way back in the 50's.

The Palace of Culture and Science (nicknamed Stalin's Rocket) was build on land generated by demolishing the total of 8 streets, that were the heart of Warsaw "capitalist city" until 1939. The building was constructed between 1952 - 1955. The Palac Kultury contains the Congress Hall, theatres, cinema and a lot more. One the other side there was even a skating rink. The building has its charm I think - and it is at the same time a very ugly building - but it reminds my of something from an early Batman comic book.

Marriott Warsaw
We had decided on going to Warsaw between Christmas and New Year even though it is rather cold there; we just wanted to go away and se something new.
I checked for good hotel deals on hotels.com and found a great offer on the Marriot. The hotel is situated next to the Russian Cultural gift to the Polish people. The hotel is one of the tallest buildings in Warsaw.
We got a room on the 19th floor with a view over the cultural centre. It was a nice large room and the bed was fantastic; I guess it was the best bed we both had slept in ever.
Besides the good price offer, we had booked the hotel because of the pool and the gym, but when we arrived in the reception they had a sign where they announced that the pool area was closed between Christmas and New Year.
The hotel had a great breakfast buffet and it was a good way to start the morning in order to get energy for cold walks in the city afterwards.

The hotel was in general a very good hotel
